I agree with flyby, and would like to add that there is a major difference between cult of personality and culture of appreciation. Take bourgeois society for example--Goerge Washington and the bourgeois revolution are upheld as positive steps forward in history, yet so little is actually taught about that revolution in high schools accross America--why?
I think because the bourgeois want their culture in the realm of personality cults -- George Washinton "represents" positive things (even though in historical reality I think the vast majority of people wouldm if told the truth, disagree with many facets of Washinton - including slavery.) So there is blind obedience -like that of Washington in America.
But we revolutionary communists don't want to live in a world that is uncritical and lazy in their thinking - so we are critical - of our enemy - the bourgeoisie - and ourselves. But at the same time we should uphold (and by that, I mean understand and struggle within ourselves to understand) our own leaders like Bob Avakian.
I think if people critically think about leadership they will find that is not a negetive feature in a social movement -- unless the masses are taught to be blindly obedient - wich would be counter- revolutionary.
I think the RCP and revolutionaries everywhere are struggling with how to counter the overwhleming power of the capitalist media. And though it is an impressive challenge, it is one we can overcome together by promoting such leaders Bob Avakian and revolutionaries like Mumia Abu-Jamal or Carl Dix.
I don't want to live in a society where we all sit around and talk about how WONDERFUL Bob Avakian is - and he doesn't either! But I do want a society where people atleast struggle to understand his works and contributions, and we work together and discuss our differences. That is a culture of appreciation.
