If you want to understand the hopes of communism today, you want to dig into this work.
And it is now (finally!) online.
Bob Avakian's Conquer the World: The International Proletariat Must and Will!
This is one of the most controversial and wide ranging works written in modern communist theory.
Avakian, who is the chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, gave this talk shortly after he was forced into exile by U.S. government attacks on him. It is now available at revcom.us in a booklength web posting.

In this analysis, Avakian breaks with decades of dominant communist thinking, and fights for a fresh, sweeping and profoundly revolutonary look at the world -- including at communist experience and theory itself.
In the beginning, Avakian laughingly tells the reader that what follows will be "trippy" -- and it is certainly that. This is a method that works to unravel complex questions and experience -- a method that is the opposite of dogmatic formulas and cheap summations.
Avakian argues that communist thinking had fallen far short of genuine internationalism -- and that revolutionaries fighting for change in one place have to take the whole world and the liberation of all humanity as their basic starting point.
He turns a criticial eye to the whole complex experience of the communist project -- upholding the great heights reached in previous revolutions, but (at the same time) looking at the short comings of even Marx, Lenin, Stalin and Mao. And what comes through, is his determination to actually make revolution, and to help lead the next wave of communist revolutions do better -- to go higher and farther than every before toward the complete liberation of human beings.
Some people think of communism as a nostalgia trip. Others think of it as a failed utopia. But here, in this work, you get to dig deep into communism as a serious project for the future, and as a scientific way of knowing and changing the world.
